Overall the outcome of the trip was successful. The United States had been granted the Open Door Policy by Japan. The Open Door Policy granted four things:
- It made Japan and the United states friendds and it created peace between the two countries
- It opened up two ports called Shimoda and Hokodate for American ships
- It guarenteed that Japn would help any ships that were wrecked near Japan and treat American sailors fairly
- It allowed American ships to trade with Japan in order to buy supplies, coal, water, and other nesseccities.
