The Americans were treated very poorly in Japan. Although they were feared they did not gain any respect. They were not wanted and seen as an enemy. American sailors were treated very poorly when they were shipwrecked in Japan.

It opened up two ports called Shimoda and Hokodate for American ships
It guarenteed that Japn would help any ships that were wrecked near Japan and treat American sailors fairly
It allowed American ships to trade with Japan in order to buy supplies, coal, water, and other nesseccities.

Overall the outcome of the trip was successful. The United States had been granted the Open Door Policy by Japan. The Open Door Policy granted four things:
The fleet stayed in Japan for 8 months before the treaty was signed. The fleet anchored on July 8th, 1853. After weeks of discussions the Open Door Policy was signed on March 31st, 1854.

The American sailors would have described Japan as an underdeveloped nation when they first arrived. The Japanese did not have a great military force. The american sailors landed in Edo (present day Tokyo) bay.
{http://www.pacificasiamuseum.org/japanesepaintings/html/images/mapJapan.gif} Tokyo Bay is located just below Edo (Tokyo).
Commodore Perry would not let any diplomats go on the journey with him to Japan in fear that they would ruin the expedition. Commodore Perry brought along four steam ships called Mississippi, Susquehanna, Powhatan, and Allegheny among the rest of his fleet.

Why did the United States send Commodore Perry and his fleet to Japan?
What were some of the important steps in planning the expedition?
American ships are able to buy supplies, coal, water, and other nessecities in Japanese ports
The United States needed the to trade with Japan so it could get more coal for its commercial whaling fleet and it was interested to learn about Japan. {http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:iso1LwK8T-3ztM:http://www.draxysoft.com/wallpapers/NationalFlags/Japanese_flag.jpg} Japanese{http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:gQSvtbsF1vJCRM:http://www.mapsofworld.com/images/world-countries-flags/japan-flag.gif} Japan flag www.draxysoft.com
